When I think about my days at Loyola, I passed out as an ordinary Loyolite, below average in studies, sports and other
extra-curriculars. But more than the thousands and thousands of pages of books I was subjected to learn, it was the cultivating
of my reading and writing abilities, importance of observing friends and learning from them, the value of team spirit and
many more minor habits that I picked up there that laid a solid foundation for my later years. One thing I regret though was
the very belated exposure I got to malayalam novels and it took me the last two years of reading malayalam articles on the
internet to rekindle a dormant affinity for the mother tongue. In our years there we were fortunate to have been taught by
some great teachers who made Loyola really special for us. Fr. Mathew Pulickal was the man who changed the course of my life.
He taught us English in the 7th and he was one man I always wanted to impress and if not for the marks I got in English that
year, I wud not have got admission to the ICSE section. In later years he taught us history so beautifully I have been a history
freak since besides his saving me a couple of times from trouble with a despot of a principal we had then. When I look back
at all the interactions I had with him I get the feeling he always tried to hint to me that I had a lot of potential within
me. At his funeral the handful of us who went cudnt help cracking jokes...wonder whether it was irony or karma that
the jolly old man who always made a grand exit from the classroom leaving us in fits of laughter had been given an earthly
exit by us in the same fashion...i wud like to think he was pleased! Mrs.Deepa Pillai our English teacher in the plus-two
years was another person who made learning English so much fun for me by making us write thought-provoking essays and I never
ever felt bored reading Shakespeare and understanding the works of all the great poets we had to study. She made life hell
for me at home by complaining to my parents how I was failing in my other subjects constanly and somehow I saw reason in wht
she said and found the motivation to do well in the nick of time. Fr.M.M.Thomas made us solve so many puzzles in our junior
school days the value of which I realized only years later when I prepared for the GRE.
